Your rain water tank is low maintenance and the implementation of some simple maintenance procedures will maximise the life of your tank. As the water you collect in your tank will only be as clean as your rainwater collection area it makes sense that you have a simple tank maintenance program.

  • Regular cleaning of guttering and inlet strainers to remove leaves and other debris. (This includes pruning of overhanging trees and vegetation)
  • Regular cleaning of your First Flush Water Diverters
  • Remove and dirt and dust build up from the exterior of your tanks with an occasional hose down to keep your tank looking its best. Tanks located in salt air environments should be hosed down more regularly to prevent salt build up
  • Do not use the top of your tank as a storage area, especially for liquids, The Tank lid is not designed to provide a structurally sound storage area and the risk of contamination from stored liquids is to be avoided at all costs
  • Remove any build up of foreign matter around the tank base
  • There will be an accumulation of sediment and other foreign matter in the bottom of your tank over time and we recommend you check your tank every 2 – 3 years. Note that studies have shown that a layer of sediment in the bottom of the tank is actually beneficial to water quality; however, it is best not to accumulate above 30mm. A simple flush with a mains water hose when the tank is empty may be all that is required. Under no circumstances should you enter inside your water tank.
  • It is possible for your stored water to develop a smell if your collection area has a large amount of collected vegetation. This can be easily resolved by treating the water with a chlorine product recommended by you pool supplier in the correct ratio for your volume of water. The chlorine will disinfect the water and evaporate out of the tank over a week or so. Follow this up by cleaning all foreign debris from the water collection path.
  • Mosquito wrigglers can develop in your tank even with the best of input filters, these are best treated as above for smelly water
  • Pumping systems need to be maintained according to the manufacturer’s specifications
