Now is a great time to ensure your water tank and raised garden be is operating at its best

Do you have extra time at home at the moment? Have you installed a water tank, or are you considering installing one? Now is a great time to work on your water tank maintenance routine. Not only can you improve your garden and home sustainability, but getting outside and being active during physical distancing is important for mental health and physical fitness.

There are several key activities you can work on now to ensure your water tank maintains water quality, including:

  1. Cleaning all gutters on your roof, and downpipes to remove leaves and debris.
  2. Trim and prune any overhanging trees and shrubs, particularly clearing any leaf fall during the Autumn months.
  3. Clean out your first flush water diverters. These allow any debris from the first rainfall to be discarded and not flow into your tank.
  4. If any smell or mosquito larvae are present, try treating your tank with the advised chlorination process.

How can I maintain my raised garden beds?

Now you’re in maintenance mode, we’ve listed some Colorbond raised garden bed maintenance tips below, to help you get the best out of your winter vegetable crop

  1. Completely weed and remove any dead plants or vegetation from your garden bed.
  2. Enhance your soil quality by investing in a compost and mulch to keep moisture in the ground, and discourage weed growth. You could consider purchasing your own worm farm to compliment your raised garden bed, by creating your own compost from your kitchen scraps.
  3. Start any seedlings in compostable containers, such as egg cartons, before transferring to your raised garden bed, to help them become established before planting with existing crops or plants.
