Are you ready to start harvesting your own rain water? The Bureau of Meteorology has announced a negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) event is occurring and will most likely continue into the Spring months.
This will lead into the predicted formation of the third consecutive La Niña (wetter than usual) weather event and an abundance of rain water available to collect.
What is a negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)?

A negative IOD is known to increase the chance of Winter and Spring rainfall over Southern and Eastern Australia, and increase the warmth in Northern Australia.
The IOD forms following ongoing changes in the difference between sea surface temperatures of the tropical Western and Eastern Indian Ocean.
The Outlook
The Bureau of Meteorology’s three month weather outlook is forecasting above average rainfall for much of Australia, particularly for the East coast of NSW.
While this is great news for tank owners, the ground is already very wet from previous rainfall, increasing the likelihood of further flooding to these areas.
Benefits for Reducing Stormwater

Urban areas with homes featuring water tanks can actively reduce the amount of stormwater that flows into the wastewater system, and can reduce the burden on drains during periods of intense rainfall.
While this may not be the main reason to have a water tank, it’s certainly beneficial, and as we see an increased number of homes across NSW featuring water tanks, the benefit continues to grow.
Summary
The last half of 2022 is shaping up to be another wetter than usual period. The Bureau of Meteorology also predicts a 50% chance, double the normal likelihood, of La Niña¹ returning in late 2022. Which is again an ocean surface temperature driven weather pattern that will produce higher than average rainfall.
